Hey there, thanks for stopping by the blog for another Mane Monday! Nobody asked, but this week I wanted to talk a little bit about why you should be sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase. Did you know that studies show we spend a third of our life asleep? If we’re going to spend that much time lying in bed, we should definitely be protecting our hair.
I started using a satin pillowcase pretty early on in my natural hair journey. I have a pretty large head covered by a large amount of hair and I could never really get a bonnet to stay on. I also tried scarves, which worked a bit better but would almost always slide off in the middle of the night. I quickly learned that a satin pillowcase was the solution. And it also offers benefits you’ve probably never considered.
A satin or silk pillowcase can help reduce frizz while preserving your curls or hairstyle. Unlike a cotton pillowcase, satin or silk will not absorb the natural oils from your hair. The satin or silk fabric will allow your hair to glide across the pillowcase with little to no friction which will result in less frizz and breakage. Bonus, a satin or silk pillowcase can also reduce wrinkles as you sleep. Because satin and silk is less drying and more gentle on the skin resulting in less irritation and damage.
A satin pillowcase is going to be less costly than a silk pillowcase because silk is a natural fiber. However, you may feel the cost to have a natural fiber is definitely worth it. This is purely a personal choice as either will likely give you similar if not identical results. Earlier this year I upgraded my single satin pillow case with this matching leopard print pair from Kitsch. You already know it was the leopard print that caught my eye. However, these cases only come in the standard pillowcase size, for that reason, I’m planning to also purchase either this silk pair of Fishers Finery 19mm 100% pure silk pillow cases (voted the best overall and editor’s choice by Good Housekeeping) available on Amazon or this adorable marble print 19mm silk pair from LilySilk. Both brands offer pillowcases in queen and king sizes. The 19mm (momme) refers to the density of the silk. Basically if 100 yards of silk weighs 19lbs then the density of the silk is 19mm. The higher the momme weight, the heavier the fabric indicating a larger amount of silk used in the weaving process. 19mm to 25mm is an ideal weight for silk bedding.
Kitsch has a two other products that I am interested in as a curly girl. The first being their microfiber towel scrunchies which claim to help dry your hair while keeping it up out of the way. This is an item I definitely need because my wet hair in a loose bun will NEVER get dry. The second is their microfiber towel pillow cover, you can’t tell me this isn’t the answer to an overnight deep conditioner’s prayers. I will often lay a regular towel over my pillow when deep conditioning over night to help protect my pillow, however this towel offers a waterproof backing to completely protect your pillow. Kinda genius!
I hope you found this post helpful. Let me know if you are planning to ditch the bonnet for a satin or silk pillowcase or if you are already using a satin or silk pillowcase. As always, thanks so much for reading. Stay curly!
