I recently had the pleasure of attending the Curvy Derby presented by the Columbus, GA chapter of the Curvy Alliance. The Curvy Alliance (formerly known as Project Curve Appeal), formed in 2008, is a multicultural organization dedicated to promoting, empowering and educating women to celebrate their beauty and embrace their curves while living a healthy lifestyle. The organization’s mission is to correct the distorted perception of curvy women everywhere and to counteract the discrimination society places on them.
The Curvy Alliance hosted their Alliance in Action Awards during the Derby themed party, hence the Curvy Derby! The Alliance in Action Award recognizes women who have distinguished themselves in their profession and/or community. The Honorees are selected by members of the local chapter of the Curvy Alliance based on community involvement, educational accomplishments and overall leadership characteristics. Each of the honorees embody the core values of the Curvy Alliance.
Uniting, Empowering, Educating and/or Entertaining women of all walks of life!
The Honorees:
Dee Armstrong, Host of The Dee Armstrong Show and television news anchor
Robbie Branscomb, CEO & Executive Director of Let’s Grow STEAM
The late Dr. Ann Hardman, Pastor, CEO and Founder of Ann Hardman Ministries
Carol Moore-Charleston, Humanitarian
Angela Peterson, Radio Personality
Tonza Thomas, President of the NAACP Columbus, GA
Of course the best part of any derby themed party, other than the cocktails, are the hats and this room was filled with lovely dresses and fancy brims. However for me, the highlight of the event was featured speaker, Maui Bigelow of P.H.A.T Girl Fresh. Maui delivered a message focused on loving yourself!
When Maui started speaking I immediately whipped out my phone with the sole intention of going live on Instagram. However, her speech was so encouraging, that I knew I had to capture it all and save the live so I could share the video here. I hope you enjoy it as much as the ladies and I did.
But hold on, I can’t let you leave without first showing you what I wore to the Curvy Derby. Of course it all started with the hat!
I knew I wanted to wear a fascinator for the event and when I started searching online, this little navy blue number caught my attention. Just the right about of mesh to play with and more feathers than flowers! SOLD! Blue is a staple color in my wardrobe so I knew I’d have no trouble building an outfit around this fascinator. I chose this simple top with a flirty cap sleeve. This top fits like your favorite tee but has enough design detail to give it a little something extra.
If you read my last blog post (I know, it was forever ago) you might recognize this printed skirt. I am still so in love with the extra side tiers. Again, a little design detail that gives this skirt a little something extra! I also picked this skirt because of the teal color in the print. I knew this would be the perfect opportunity to accessorize with these fun tiered tassel earrings. Overall I feel like this outfit is full of whimsy and just perfect for a springtime derby party!
