Hello again curl-friends! I have been complaining a lot about my hair feeling dry, easily matted and tangled in certain areas so I figured maybe it was time I stop complaining and see what I can do to rectify the problem. I have been thinking a lot about what might be the cause of the problem and I’m thinking it may be one of three things;
- damage caused by use of Deva Curl products
- the possibility that my hair has become protein sensitive to coconut oil based products
- could my overnight deep conditioning be weakening my hair through over moisturizing?
There is not much more that can be done about the first one. I’ve already discontinued use of all Deva Curl products and truth be told, I’m still a bit salty about that last purchase being a waste of money. But we will talk more on Deva Curl at a later time.
As for the second option, I’ve done a little research and while coconut oil itself does not contain any protein, it is 50% lauric acid which helps to rebuild and strengthen the protein structure of your hair. Over use could lead to protein build up, blocking the hair from absorbing much needed moisture. Could this be the issue? I’m not going to lie, a part of me is very much in denial that my beloved coconut oil could be the culprit. Early on in my natural hair journey, I would apply coconut oil directly to my hair before applying any other products because it is one of the few oils that has a molecular structure small enough to actually penetrate the hair shaft and not just coat the hair. Since so many leave ins, moisturizers and stylers contain coconut oil, I stopped using raw coconut oil directly on my hair years ago so I doubt this could be the issue.
Overnight conditioning could definitely be a factor. Although, most of my research leans toward overnight conditioning causing the hair to feel soft and mushy, which has not been an issue for me, it can also cause the hair to weaken and be more prone to breakage.
All I know for sure is that it’s finding the perfect balance of protein and moisture that is the key to healthy hair. So today I’m reaching for a few of the Qhemet Biologics products that I received in the Curl Box Birthday Box back in March. Namely the Egyptian Wheatgrass Cleanings Tea and the Moringa Tree Conditioning Ghee. The cleansing tea is sulfate free and contains egyptian wheatgrass, barley and alfalfa to strengthen follicles and prevent shedding. (sounds like this is just what we need) This cleanser worked really well to cleanse my scalp and did not leave it feeling at all stripped. I was pleasantly surprised at how nicely it lathered, however less pleased with the lavender essential oil scent.
The conditioning ghee on the other hand, had a more pleasing smell in my opinion, almost like a fruity candy. Although this conditioner does contain virgin coconut oil, it does not contain any proteins. Nor does it contain silcones, mineral oils or parabens. (I think we may be on to something here!) Along with coconut oil, the conditioning ghee also contains moringa oil, extracts of oatstraw and burdock root, and like the cleansing tea contains ayurvedic botanicals that naturally contain MSM which help to nourish the hair follicle.
I used the conditioning ghee as a deep conditioner while in the shower and was pretty impressed with the slip and ease of detangling. I was even more impressed with the way my hair felt after rinsing out the conditioning ghee. It almost felt as though I had already applied a leave in conditioner. But I hadn’t and I almost didn’t feel the need to. But of course I did. I followed up with a bit of Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in and styled with Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic. However, I could have used the conditioning ghee because this product can also be used as a leave in conditioner, detangler on dry hair, and to heat straighten. To be frank, if it can do all of these things, I will definitely be blown away and I also think it should come in a bigger bottle! Speaking of product sizes, Qhemet Biologics offers minis of many of their products for first time trying and travel.
I know I am pretty late to trying out Qhemet Biologics but I am hoping that maybe they are the perfect balance of moisture and protein my hair needs right now. Let me know if you have tried either the cleansing tea or the conditioning ghee and how they worked for your hair. As always feel free to reach out with any questions and thanks so much for reading!
