Hey curlies! Today we are back at it again with another products battle for this week’s Mane Monday. This time I will be comparing refresher sprays. More specifically Camille Rose Naturals Lavender Shaken Hair Spritzer vs Uncle Funky’s Daughter Thirsty Curls. Just like last time we will no be relying solely on hair photos. We will also consider the ingredients and application. So let’s get to it.
Let me start by prefacing this review by stating that I do not like the smell of lavender. I can however, tolerate it if not too overpowering. Luckily, the Lavender Shaken Hair Spritzer falls into this category. It has a soft floral scent with a light lavender undertone. The Thirsty Curls has more of a citrus scent to it. Surprisingly, I don’t mind the smell of the Lavender Shaken Hair Spritzer during application but I do not love the fact that it lingers in the hair once dry and the citrus scent of Thirsty Curls does not.
Both products are true sprays with a very watery liquid consistency. The Lavender Shaken Hair Spritzer comes with a trigger nozzle while Thirsty Curls has a pump nozzle. In my opinion both are extremely difficult to use with wet hands. I wish I had a solution for this, but I do no so if I had to choose, I’d go with the pump nozzle because there is no locking mechanism. On trigger nozzles, I am constantly pushing the button which locks the nozzle by accident. Super frustrating. The Lavender Shaken Hair Spritzer feels noticeable more oily to the touch and much more slippery when applying to the hair. This is likely due to it containing lavender oil while Thirsty Curls contains no oil but does have coconut milk. Also I noticed that the Lavender Shaken Hair Spritzer does leave an oily film on my sink from over spray, so you will definitely want to be mindful of your clothes when using.
Both sprays contain glycerin, however it is worth noting that it is listed much higher up in the ingredient list for Thirsty Curls. In fact, it is the third ingredient, which is something to keep in mind if you live in a very humid climate like I do. Glycerin is a natural humectant which draws moisture from the air into your hair. In my experience, products that are high in glycerin tend to make my hair very poufy once it is completely dry. In addition to glycerin, I was not happy to see PEG-12 Dimethicone listed in Thirsty Curls. While it is a water soluble silicone, it is still a silicone.
Uncle Funky’s Daughter Thirsty Curls – Water, Polysorbate 20, Glycerin, Cetrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-11, PEG-8, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Milk, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Extract, Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey) Leaf Extract, Calendula Officinalis (Calendula) Flower Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail) Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium PCA, Panthenol, Magnesium Sulfate, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Fragrance.
Camille Rose Naturals – Lavender Shaken Hair Spritzer –
Water, Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Flower Extract, Hedera Helix (Ivy) Extract, Parietaria Officinalis (Pellitory) Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Sambucus Nigra (Black Elderberry) Arnica Montana (Arnica) Flower Extract, Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, Aloe Barbedensis Leaf Juice, Panthenol, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Polyquaternium 6, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexlglycerin, Fragrance and Love
In addition to lavender oil, the Lavender Shaken Hair Spritzer contains mallow flower which softens and nurtures dry damaged hair, black elderberry to moisturize split ends and stimulate hair growth and cucumber which can strengthens damaged hair when coupled with aloe . Thirsty Curls contains rosemary which can stimulate hair follicles to promote hair growth and slow premature hair loss. There are also lots of leaf and flower extracts in Thirsty Curls such as chamomile, calendula, sage, nettle and horsetail which are all good for stimulating hair follicles or soothing the scalp. However ingredients like sodium hyaluronate and sodium PCA work similarly to glycerin and attract moisture to the hair. Perhaps this is why they added the silicone, to coat the hair and prevent the absorption off too much moisture from the air? This is pure speculation on my part, I’m not a chemist!
Over all, I think this battle goes to Uncle Funky’s Daughter as well. Now after all of that, I’m still not 100% sure one really needs a refresher spray. Or at least I’m not sure my hair benefits from using either of these as a refresher spray. Because of the oiliness of the Lavender Shaken Hair Spritzer, I think this would be better used directly on the scalp or even as a leave in which the bottle actually suggests for extra moisture.
Let me know if you’ve tried either of these refresher sprays and how you are using them in your hair routine. Let’s talk about it! Please let me know if you have any questions and as always thanks so much for reading!
