Recently, while attending Curly Con 2022, I heard Natasha Camile of @curly.strands talk about a few of the benefits of using rosemary water on your hair. I don’t know where I’ve been because apparently this is the latest DIY trend that has been blowing up all over tiktok. I became immediately intrigued and after a quick google search, knew that I would have to give this at home remedy a try. So today I’m sharing four benefits of rosemary water along with the simple steps I used to create this leave in spray.
Four Benefits of Rosemary Water
- Prevents Hair Loss – Rosemary improves blood circulation and strengthens the hair follicles which help to reduce hair loss.
- Can Promote Hair Growth – Rosemary contains carnosic acid, an antioxidant known to have an effect on nerve damage. Keeping scalp nerves healthy can stimulate hair growth.
- Prevent Premature Greying – Rosemary has a natural darkening effect, although not as strong as sage. If you are hoping to darken your hair you may want to add in some sage when boiling the rosemary.
- Fight Dandruff – Rosemary has a combination of anti-fugal and decongestant properties which can keep your scalp free of fungus.
How to Make Rosemary Water
- Add 4 cups of water to a saucepan with a handful of rosemary sprigs. I suggest at least one sprig for each cup of water.
- Place on the stove and bring to a boil. Once the water boils, remove from the heat, cover and let steep for about 4 – 5 hours. The water should have a deep rosy hue.
- Strain out the rosemary water into a container and discard the actual rosemary.
- Use a funnel to pour the rosemary water into a spray bottle. I used a paper coffee filter to further strain out any tiny rosemary or woodsy particles.
How To Use Rosemary Water
Simply spray the rosemary water as a leave in on clean wet hair and brush through. Then proceed with your usual wash day styling. Be sure to also spray the rosemary water onto the scalp to help achieve the scalp benefits mentioned above. This is the perfect time to give yourself a little scalp massage to help boost the benefits.
Try using rosemary water in place of plain water to help refresh your curls between wash days.
How To Store Rosemary Water
Keep your rosemary water in an air tight container stored in the refrigerator between use. This should allow your rosemary water to keep for up to two weeks.
It’s that simple! Let me know if you’ve tried rosemary water or if you decide to give this quick recipe a try! I look forward to hearing from you.
