Hey Curlfriends! Today I’m sharing the five things every natural/curly girl needs in order to have beautiful hair everyday! I debated for a while whether to call this the curly girl starter kit or the curly girl essentials, but ultimately I decided to go with must haves because as long as you have these five things, you are pretty much guaranteed to have nothing but “good hair days ahead of you! So just what are these five must have things? I’m glad you asked, keep reading.
Number 1. A silk or satin pillowcase (and/or a satin scarf, but preferably a pillowcase) is a must have for a number of reasons. I discussed a few of these reasons in my post on why you should sleep on a satin pillowcase, but they are worth repeating. The friction caused when your hair rubs up against a cotton pillowcase can cause hair breakage and split ends. Cotton is also more likely to absorb the natural oils from your hair, leaving it dryer and more prone to the damage caused by the friction. A satin pillowcase not only allows your hair to glide smoothly across it’s surface, it is also gentle on the skin. That’s right, just like your hair, it won’t suck the moisture out of your skin and is less likely to cause fine lines and wrinkles. Bonus!
Number 2. A good detangling brush is a definite must have. If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know not too long ago I went on a little quest to find the perfect detangling brush. Four brushes later, I have found a brush that I love. It’s the Flexy Brush for Detangling and Curl Clumping by Curl Keeper and it does just that.
The flexible bristles on this brush are perfect for gently massaging shampoo throughout my scalp. This brush glides through my hair with ease, especially when I detangle in the shower after applying the next must have on my list…..
Number 3. A good deep conditioner! Again if you’ve been rocking with me for a minute you know that deep conditioning is a MUST! This is the one curly/natural girl hair rule that you must not break! In fact let’s all raise our right hands right now, and repeat after me. I promise to use a deep conditioner at least once every two weeks! Personally, I think once a week is best. Even on the weeks that I co-wash, I still drench my strands in a deep conditioner or hair mask while in the shower. And since discovery Honey’s Handmade decadent deep conditioners, I’ve learned that I don’t have to always deep condition for long periods of time or overnight (which is somewhat controversial) to get plump and juicy curls.
Number 4. A microfiber towel. Once you’ve rinsed out that deep conditioner, don’t just wrap your hair in an ordinary bath towel. Your curls deserve better. Like cotton pillowcases, terry cloth bath towels can be too ruff on your delicate strands. Terry cloth towels ruff and weaken the hair shaft which can lead to breakage and unnecessary frizz. Instead you should invest in a microfiber towel which is light weight and gentler on the hair while it wicks away moisture without causing frizz. In addition to my microfiber towel, I recently purchased the ScrunchIt Towel, made just for curly hair. This towel is made of a chamois type of fabric and is perfect for scrunching my curls and squeezing out any excess water after styling.
Number 5. The fifth and final must have for all natural and curly girls is a true love and acceptance of your hair. Embracing your hair no matter the length or texture is essential and will show in how you care for your hair. Not comparing your crown to someone else’s and having realistic expectations for your hair will allow you to love your curls, coils or kinks because like you, they are unique and beautiful.
Now of course there are plenty of other tools and tips that a curly girl might deem as essential, but I promise that these five things will take your curly routine to the next level! I hope you find these must haves helpful and that you decide to give them a try. If you do be sure to leave me a comment and tell me how much you are loving your hair!
